Cape Town - Travelling solo can seem like a daunting adventure. But it need not be.

Armed with the right attitude, a lust for life, and a brief understanding of the country you're travelling to, it's laws and ethical boundaries will ensure you'll have the time of your life.

Remember these cardinal solo travel tips and stay savvy when you're out on your first solo world exploring adventure:

1. Plan your trip in advance... some extent, at least. You don’t have to book meals and accommodation in advance, but at least pick a continent and a few countries, and stick to those.

2. Tell people where you’re going

You’re not helping anyone by keeping your destinations secret, now really.

3. Invest in a portable mobile recharge pack

There is nothing as frustrating (and scary) as running out of the life source that is your mobile device.

4. Familiarize yourself with the language
Know the name of your accommodation, and other essential places’ and peoples’ names, in the language of the country you’re in. If you get a bit lost, knowing the local terms would help you tremendously.

5. Pack lots of reading material
On a kindle, of course. Pack books that are ideally of and about the destination you’re visiting. A person reading is never lonely.

6. Pack light

There’s no-one to help you carry, simple as that.

7. Go on an organized group activity
Choose your activity wisely, though. If you’re after some company, go on a day-long hike. If you’re only up for some company, but still need some freedom of movement, rather opt for something like scuba diving or horse riding.

8. Arrive at your new destination during the day

Not only will you have time to familiarize yourself with the new place, you’ll also avoid a whole lot of night crawlers.

9. Make contact

Check in on Facebook, or just sms your mum so she’ll refrain from sending out a Spanish search party for you.

10. Trust your instinct

If the person looks dodge, he probably IS dodge. The same goes for that ‘cultural’ dish and the dark alleyway around the corner.

About Me

My photo

I have traveled far and wide and lived in South Africa, the UK and Malaysia.

I am a technical person that never forgets anything. Recalling it at the right time though is a struggle.

I have always worked with IBM technologies and worked for them for many years. I now do my best to migrate people away from IBM technologies.
